it's not my imagination

black flag was a punk band from hermosa beach california that formed in 1977. they are widely considered to be one of the first hardcore punk bands. throughout their ten-year career as a band, black flag’s concert experiences became legendary, especially in southern california. i was lucky enough to witness one of their shows when i was just a young punk kid and it changed me somehow.

It was my generation. We used to live a block away from the Cuckoos Nest on the 1900 block and Placentia Ave in Costa Mesa, CA. Every night the Costa Mesa PD would come into the club at 10 pm to go ahead and arrest all the kids under 18 for curfew. Lucky for my freind Billy and I knew all the bouncers and would go upstairs to the green room and mixing room and wait out the cops. The first night Henry Rollins sang live with Black Flag in California was at the Cuckoos Nest. The cops planted a stolen Night-Stick in the Club and everone was tossing it around in the pit. Now, the CMPD had a thing out for Black Flag due to some previous Policed induced Riots that occured at the Nest. So, that night they were going to do their best to ruin the show. They starting arresting anyone that looked young and could not prove they were of age, that pissed everyone off and thats how Black Flag vs CMPD always ended up in a riot. Gus Marks in the LBC.

my buddy craig's brother was a bouncer at the cukoos nest and he used to get us in when he knew it would be safe for punk kids. i think we were in 6th grade so we did not get to see many live shows. what a great time for punk music in america!
